California Permit Practice Test

Original practice questions, every one cited to the exact section and PDF page of the official California Driver's Handbook. Free to start, with no account. Going on takes a free account.

Verified against the current official CA Driver's Handbook (DL 600, rev. 6/2025), checked August 2026.

What makes this one different

Most permit practice sites ask you to trust them. PermitProof shows receipts. Every question carries a citation: the handbook section, the PDF page, and the handbook revision it was verified against. Tap the proof on any answer and check it yourself in the official handbook.

  • Questions written in our own words from the California Vehicle Code and the official handbook. Never copied.
  • Every question was checked twice, by two independent AI passes, before it shipped. Questions that failed were deleted, not fixed up.
  • Road sign images are official public-domain MUTCD graphics from the FHWA.
  • Misses go to a mistake notebook, each with its proof. No ads.

The real CA knowledge test, briefly

  • The DMV requires a score of 80 percent (official source) and publishes no question count. Test-takers report 46 questions (pass at 38) under 18 and 36 (pass at 30) for adults. As consistently reported by recent test-takers; the DMV does not publish official counts. An exact 80 percent of those counts would be 37 and 29, so the reported lines are one question stricter, and our mock exam grades on the stricter ones.
  • Each real question has one correct answer and two wrong choices; our mock exam mirrors that.
  • You get three attempts per application before you must reapply, and if you are under 18 you wait seven days before trying again, not counting the day you failed (handbook PDF page 11).
