The real test
How many questions is the Pennsylvania permit test?
The answer
All ages
Questions18
To pass15
Official, published by PennDOT.
What happens if you fail
- Fail the knowledge test and you can retake it the following business day (pa.gov, checked August 2026, and the pinned manual states the same rule on PDF page 9).
- The manual sets no total limit on how many times you may take the knowledge test, and it does set a daily one: you may take it only one time on any day, whatever the test location (PDF page 6).
- A separate rule applies to the ROAD test, not this one: if you are under 18 and fail that, Pennsylvania law makes you wait seven (7) days before you can retake it (manual PDF page 10).
Does this practice test match the real one
No practice test is the real test. The agency writes the real test's questions and does not publish them, so nobody can show you the ones you will actually be asked, and that includes us.
What can be shown is where our mock follows a rule the agency published, where nothing is published so the number is a fact about us rather than about the real test, and where the two genuinely differ. Each row below says which.
How many questions, and how many you must get rightSame
Eighteen questions and fifteen to pass. PennDOT publishes both and the pinned manual states them again on PDF page 9. This mock runs the same eighteen and grades on the same fifteen.
How many answer choices you seeNot published
Four. The manual says multiple choice and never says how many choices a question carries, and no source here establishes it, so this number is a fact about this mock and not about the real test.
Where you sit it, and what you may have openNot published
The manual does not say what you may have with you at a knowledge test. Here you may have anything open, and nobody is watching.
How long you getNot published
The manual publishes no time limit for the knowledge test, and this mock does not impose one.
