One format, every age
New York's written test has a single published format, and this mock mirrors it, road-sign rule included.
Official, published by the NY DMV.
How we set this format
- The exam format is official NY DMV policy, stated in the Driver's Manual itself: the written test is 20 questions, pass at 14 correct, and at least 2 of the 4 road sign questions must be correct (manual PDF page 10, checked July 2026). Source
- The same written test applies at every age. What can differ is where you take it: the DMV states that applicants under 18 have the option to take the permit test online (dmv.ny.gov, checked July 2026).
- The DMV does not publish a retest waiting period for a failed knowledge test, so PermitProof states none.
Our verified bank currently carries four sign-image questions, so every mock includes those four and applies the official rule (at least 2 of 4 correct) to them.
The DMV does not publish how many choices each real test question shows, so this mock shows all four stored choices per question, which is only ever harder than the real thing. You get your results at the end, like the real test.
