How we set this format

How the New York mock exam is set.

What this mock exam runs

These are the numbers this mock exam is built and graded on.

All ages

Resultsat the end

Includes 4 road sign questions. At least 2 must be right.

Our verified bank carries more sign-image questions than one mock can seat, so every mock draws four of them fresh and applies the official rule (at least 2 of 4 correct) to those four.

Where the agency publishes how many choices its own test shows, this mock matches it. Where it does not, this mock shows every choice we wrote.

Where these numbers come from

Official, published by the NY DMV.

  • The exam format is official NY DMV policy, stated in the Driver's Manual itself: the written test is 20 questions, pass at 14 correct, and at least 2 of the 4 road sign questions must be correct (manual PDF page 10, checked July 2026).
  • The same written test applies at every age. What can differ is where you take it: the DMV states that applicants under 18 have the option to take the permit test online (dmv.ny.gov, checked July 2026).
  • The DMV does not publish a retest waiting period for a failed knowledge test, so PermitProof states none.

What we could not establish

These are not on this page, because nothing we hold establishes them.

  • How many answer choices the real New York written test shows. We have not established it, so this page does not state it, and this mock shows every choice we wrote.

PermitProof is not affiliated with the New York State DMV.
